Solarplate Etchings
SOLARPLATE is a steel backed polymer printing plate used by artists who draw, paint, make marks or use photography. The process was developed in 1970-71 by Dan Welden, Master Printmaker and pioneer of ‘safer’ printmaking techniques, after which he co-authored “Printmaking in the Sun” with Australian artist Pauline Muir. Basic Instructions for Printmaking with Solarplates™ consist of a thin layer of photo-sensitive polymer applied to a steel backing. The polymer will harden any place that UV light touches the plate, while unexposed areas remain soft and water soluble. After the plate is exposed, it is rinsed with water and re-hardened. Then the plate is ready to be inked and printed. More information can be found at www.solarplate.com
